The Harlem Free-Arters

This past weekend, my roomie Laurel and I volunteered with Free Arts NYC, which provides under-served children with a unique combination of educational arts and one-on-one mentoring. Our Harlem ‘Winter Wonderland’ Saturday consisted of holiday puppets, wreathe decorating, model magic winter-scapes and gingerbread houses. Another way to describe each art project would be a progression of messiness: a little messy, pretty messy, ridiculously messy and then deliciously messy (thanks to the gingerbread frosting).

Talk about holiday spirit. There were more than 80 twenty-somethings in an elementary school gym at 10 AM on a cold, snowy Saturday in Manhattan. We were each paired with a ‘buddy’ for the day and ages ranged from 6 to 13 – I got a sweet, energetic, creative and a surprisingly fast runner: Jaylen. Laurel got a sweet, energetic and very amusing: Danny.

While gingerbread house making:

Jaylen: Are you an art teacher or something?

Me: Nope, I’m just your art-buddy for the day.

Jaylen: Well, you should be! (My heart melts.) Where’s the boss of this thing? I’m going to tell her to hire you.

Needless to say, my buddy and I bonded over our mutual affinity for glitter, holiday cheer, sassy remarks and Hershey Kisses.
